Out-of-the-box Microsoft Exchange provides email and collaboration services. Users have the ability to communicate information through email and to collaborate with others by publishing documents and other work items in shared folders. As well as standard free-form email messages it is possible to define primitive electronic forms (eforms) so that structured information can be gathered and communicated by email. While it is possible to automate the movement of email through rules associated with folders, in the main, work items sent by email must be routed by the user. Additionally, eform applications are practically constrained to request-reply type scenarios such as booking a holiday or reviewing a document. These capabilities in themselves offer benefits to an organisation but the Apex Workflow system extends them to the point where whole business processes can be implemented within the Exchange infrastructure.
